Finalists Progress in element14 Wearable Technology Competition
Electronics distributor element14 and DIY electronics provider Adafruit have announced the finalists in its “Hats Off” global design challenge. The challenge now requires participants to re-design the hat into wearable technology solutions by using the Adafruit GEMMA and an additional accessory pack. The finalists will use the following to complete their project:
- Adafruit Micro Lip - USB Lilon/LiPoly charge - v1
- Lithium Ion Polymer Battery - 3.7v 500mAh
- Four Flora RGB NeoPixels V2
- Stainless Thin Conductive Thread - 2 ply - 25 meter/85 ft.
- Photo cell (CdS photo-resistor)
- Small Alligator Clip Test Lead (set of 12)
- GEMMA miniature wearable electronic platform
- USB cable - A/MiniB - 3ft.
- Tactile On/Off Switch with Leads
- Fast Vibration Sensor Switch
- Small Enclosed Piezo w/ Wires
The finalists include competitors from the United States, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and South Africa. They are: Todd Cowley, Tyler Crumpton, Gladys Delgado-Garced, Barbara Eldredge, Miles Flavel, Lori Griffiths, Reed Morse, Carl Penny, Claire Price, and Lourens Smit. All finalists’ designs can be seen on element14’s Adafruit Gemma Hats Off Challenge Competitors page. Designs include an Iron Man light-up helmet, matching dog and owner umbrella hats with directional capability, and a furry hood with animated eyes.
The competition ends on October 31, 2014. Finalists will be judged based on their creativity, quality of documentation, and execution of their project. The grand prize is an Oculus Rift from element14 and an Adafruit complete FLORA Collection parts pack.
