Epec Engineered Technologies has expanded its custom electronics design and manufacturing services with the addition of new space to its New Bedford, Massachusetts, facility. The contract manufacturer added 4,000 square feet to its existing 20,000 square-foot building, allowing the firm to optimize manufacturing processes for two key products lines—custom battery packs and fans and motors.
The company also reconfigured its warehouse and quality control areas to improve product flow through its test and assembly process, representatives said.
"We have doubled the number of people in manufacturing over the last three months, and with the 20% plus growth that we have seen in 2014, the added space was needed to continue to allow us to meet customer needs,” said Marc Leclair, vice president of operations.
Epec said the increase in space was partially related to recent energy-efficiency mandates. Energy Star’s call for reductions in the power consumption of commercial refrigeration units, for instance, created a spike in demand for more energy-efficient fans and motors, the company said.
Expansion has been a key part of Epec’s growth strategy, CEO Ed McMahon said:
“Investing in expansion has been one of the reasons that Epec has grown so much in the past 10 years, as every company must be improving their capabilities to continue to provide value to their customers,” said McMahon. “We also needed additional space as our printed circuit board business has grown over 13% in 2014 due to our willingness and ability to provide inventory management services for our customers."
